Når kunstneren overskygger kunsten

Von Trier-skandalen: Jeg beundrer Lars von Triers kunst, men jeg irriteres over hans person - ikke mindst i disse dage. Som filmnørd er det frustrerende at opleve, hvordan Triers (i dette tilfælde fatale) selviscenesættelse endnu engang stjæler billedet fra værket, det hele burde dreje sig om. Samtlige medier - mit eget inkl. - vil forståeligt hellere svælge i udenomsskandaler end kritisk dissekere filmen 'Melancholia', og gad vide, hvor mange danskere der efterhånden har en holdning til Lars von Trier uden at vide en brik om, hvad han kunstnerisk står for.
Jeg forsvarer ikke Triers Hitler-jokende udtalelser og kunne aldrig drømme om det. Jeg synes blot, at de - og hans person som helhed - er ret ligegyldige i den større kulturelle sammenhæng. Her står vi med verdens fremmeste filmfestival - med hele to danske instruktører i kapløbet om den fornemmeste pris for første gang i en årrække. Alligevel er det ikke nok til at løbe med overskrifterne eller udgangspunktet for debatten. Jeg har aldrig fattet og vil næppe nogensinde fatte virakken om personen Lars von Trier eller dennes tossede udmeldinger, men siden hvornår er kunstneren blevet mere interessant end kunsten? Og med hvilke konsekvenser?
Det er essentielt for kulturens udvikling og udbredelse, at den ikke også som så meget andet i det moderne samfund simplificeres og personificeres til ukendelighed. Så kære medier såvel som mediebrugere: Se/had/elsk/diskuter von Triers FILM - glem hans i det store perspektiv uinteressante og ikke at forglemme socialt handicappede PERSON. Store kunstnere har altid været lige dele gale og geniale - Mozart, Van Gogh etc. - and so what? Den virkelige nedtur for Trier er, at han med 'Melancholia' i mine øjne for første gang nærmer sig kunstnerisk ligegyldighed. Gid dét ville være omdrejningspunktet for diskussionen.
